Ventriloquist

Ventriloquism is the art of projecting or ‘throwing’ the voice so that it appears to come from a source other than mouth of the speaker.

It is an ancient art. Egyptian priests used it to fool people into thinking that stone gods could speak. They believed that the sounds came from the stomach. The word ‘ventriloquist’ itself comes from two Latin words: ventri, stomach, and loquis, to speak.

Today we know that the stomach plays no role in ventriloquism. The performer throws his voice by using his tongue in a particular way and modifying sounds by the use of the muscles of his throat and palate.

It requires years of practice to become a competent ventriloquist.
